We all know that motivation is felting…however let me show you a little unused trick that can keep you going through hell even if you found it hard to get out of bed this morning.
This is a long term ‘motivation trick,’ I have motivation trick in quotations to show that I don’t consider it a trick or even motivation but a mindset that you need to adopt.
You probably wondering what the hell is he talking about?
Well we have often heard that it is bad to compare yourself to others, and generally this is true. However, instead of comparing ourselves to another persons accomplishment who are way ahead of us….
….you should be comparing your habits, daily routine, decision making or discipline with those you admire the most. This can be from the people around you, to a person that you haven’t even meet yet to some of the greatest people who have ever walked the earth.
Can you see how comparing yourself and modelling the peoples you admire that you can make great strides in your life.
Here are some things that might go through you mind right now:
I don’t want to go for this run this morning.
I think I’ll pack work in early today.
I’m too scared to make that call I know I should.
This bed is so warm I can’t get out of it.
Should I start a business rather than get a job.
But when you ask the question;
What would _______ do?
You find yourself having a lot more self discipline or courage because you almost feel judged by the person if you didn’t.
We’ll go through some of the examples again.
I don’t want to go for a run this morning. What would Jason Bourne do?
I think I’ll pack work in early today? What would Teddy Roosevelt do?
I’m too scared to make that call I know I should. What would John D Rockefeller do?
This bed is so warm I can’t get out of it. What would the soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy do?
Should I start a business rather than get a job? What would Richard Branson do.
If you studied some of the most famous people ever, you will see they often did this.
Alexander The Great looked to his Father and Gods as a comparison.
Napoleon would model Alexander The Great
This is so powerful especially for those who have hit the highest levels of success that they have little people to compare themselves to. People like Bill Gates or Will Smith might compare themselves to the qualities of those greats of history as they are so far ahead of everyone alive in their fields.
Instead of comparing yourself to your neighbour or co-worker why not compare yourself to the best. It will send you on a much different coarse.
What you need to do is pick out a select amount of people you really admire. Get to know them really well that its like they are already in your life even if they are not. If the person is one of the greats and is long dead you need to study their autobiographies if they have one, or anything you can get your hands on.
You do this to figure out their personality as best as possible. From here you will be able to understand what they are likely to do in a given situation.
When you have this done. Make sure to constantly compare yourself to their daily habits and decisions doing this over time along with the action needed will leave you in a much different situation a few weeks, months or years down the road.
Remember also that you don’t have to copy every quality of a great person, just the ones you admire. Every great person had some bad qualities if we look close enough. You will need to use your own moral compass.
